An enthusiastic, passionate and hardworking film & event professional, Gar O’Brien has been the programme director of the Galway Film Fleadh since 2010. A graduate from the Huston School of Film and Digital Media in NUIG, Gar holds a Master’s Degree in Film, Society and Culture. He also has a Diploma in Audience Development and Marketing in the Arts from University of Ulster and has worked for the last ten years in the heart of Galway and Ireland’s film communities.
Gar possesses extensive knowledge of contemporary and classical cinema and is deeply interested in film history and film theory and maintains a genuine interest in educating others. In addition to curating, programming and delivering a programme of the best in new Irish and International cinema to audiences’ year-round for Ireland’s leading film festival, Gar is also heavily involved with the Junior Film Fleadh which seeks to introduce young people to cultural cinema as well as providing training and skills that support a career in cinema.
Gar has also lectured in Film Festival Theory, Genre and Film Narratology.
